Gas Introduction

Hydrogen, with the chemical formula H₂, ranks first in the periodic table of elements. It is a diatomic gas molecule composed of two hydrogen atoms that share one pair of electrons. Hydrogen is the smallest molecule and the lightest gas in nature, with a density only one-fourteenth of that of air. It is colorless and odorless, yet highly flammable, so extreme caution is required during use.

Discovery History of Hydrogen

As early as the 16th century, Paracelsus, a Swiss physician, mixed iron filings with acid and obtained a combustible gas, which was hydrogen. However, he failed to conduct further research on it and missed the opportunity to be recorded in the history of chemical element discovery.

In the 17th century, Jan Baptist van Helmont, a Belgian scientist, also came into contact with hydrogen by chance, but he did not isolate, collect or study it. Robert Boyle, a British chemist, once accidentally collected this gas as well, yet he did not carry out relevant research either.

It was Henry Cavendish, a British chemist, who seized the opportunity. In 1766, during an experiment, Cavendish accidentally dropped iron sheets into hydrochloric acid solution and noticed a large number of bubbles generated in the solution. This phenomenon immediately aroused his strong interest. He collected the gas by water displacement method and conducted in-depth research. A series of experimental findings showed that the gas would explode when mixed with air and exposed to an open spark, and it would produce water after burning in the air.

As the first person to collect and systematically study hydrogen, Cavendish is universally recognized as the discoverer of hydrogen in the history of chemistry. Nevertheless, influenced by the phlogiston theory, he once regarded this flammable gas as phlogiston.

It was not until 1787 that Antoine Lavoisier, a French chemist, officially defined hydrogen as a chemical element. Since hydrogen produces water after combustion, he named this flammable gas "hydrogen", which means maker of water.

Applications

Hydrogen can be used as a gaseous fuel, in petroleum refining, and in the production of artificial cream such as grease and hardened oil. It is also applied to the synthesis of methanol, hydrochloric acid, ammonia and other chemicals, welding and metal cutting, meteorological observation, glass melting, and metallurgical industry. In addition, it serves as a coolant in the form of liquid hydrogen. In semiconductor manufacturing, hydrogen is adopted as balance gas, etching gas, standard gas, zero-point gas and calibration gas, and applied in thermal oxidation, polysilicon production, tungstenization, ion implantation, carrier gas delivery and sintering.

Precautions for Use

1.Hydrogen is highly flammable and explosive. Leakage detection devices must be installed in all usage areas.
2.Operators shall wear full-piece anti-static protective suits.
3.The usage area shall be kept away from open flames, and direct sunlight exposure is prohibited.
4.Steel cylinders must be placed in a safe and stable location. Impact and collision are strictly forbidden.
5.Use a handcart for short-distance handling. Manual carrying or cylinder rolling is strictly prohibited.
6.Conduct regular inspections of cylinders. Any unqualified cylinders are forbidden from further service.
